Wikipedia is an encyclopedia written as a wiki, started January 2001, which used UseModWiki
software and is licensed under the GNU FDL. It can be found at https://www.wikipedia.org/
. In page numbers, Wikipedia is now the MeatBall:BiggestWiki
(over 400,000 pages of encyclopedia articles in the English-language section according to site stats), and undoubtedly it is one of the fastest-growing wikis in existence. Wikipedia is extremely grateful to Clifford for his fine software and his help.
Wikipedia represented a very large-scale test of UseModWiki software. Scalability issues appeared on Wikipedia, particularly regarding the search system and a need to manage the large number of pages with various indexing features. (and what else?)
Since January 2002, English Wikipedia no longer used UseModWiki but rather its own software "Phase II" written in PHP. A rewritten software "Phase III" (later known as MediaWiki) was gradually deployed to all language editions of Wikipedia from July 2002.
(DavidB) Are there wikipedia pages using UseModWiki in archive? Can we have a look at them?
